Subject: [Masjid Tucson] Submission weekly reminder In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful Peace be upon you, Righteousness Defined [Quran 2:177] Righteousness is not turning your faces towards the east or the west. Righteous are those who believe in GOD, the Last Day, the angels, the scripture, and the prophets; and they give the money, cheerfully, to the relatives, the orphans, the needy, the traveling alien, the beggars, and to free the slaves; and they observe the Contact Prayers (Salat) and give the obligatory charity (Zakat); and they keep their word whenever they make a promise; and they steadfastly persevere in the face of persecution, hardship, and war. These are the truthful; these are the righteous. Among the traits of the righteous is that they keep their word whenever they make a promise (Quran 2:177). So, when we make a promise or a commitment to someone, we need to do our very best to fulfill that promise. To remind us to take our oaths seriously, God tells us in Quran 5:89: "... If you violate an oath, you shall atone by feeding ten poor people from the same food you offer to your own family, or clothing them, or by freeing a slave. If you cannot afford this, then you shall fast three days. ..." May God forgive us for our mistakes and help us keep our word whenever we make a promise.
